After the first day’s intensive digging and tire-pounding it was quite nice to spend the second day with the group that works on some less physical parts of the build. During the second day we worked on filling a fence going around the property with trash (to be covered over with adobe) and building the glass bricks from old bottles that are used to form beautiful lit patterns on the house walls.

During the rest of the week we worked with – amongst other things – with getting the metal cages for the rest of the roof sections in place and beginning to spackle cement over them to form stable cement vaults that will be covered with earth that will help stabilize the temperature in the house. Many, many kilos of cement need to get from the below the building site up the steep slope to the house (the road is way too narrow for cars) but with a human chain and a lot of buckets the process is quite smooth

Apart from getting the roof for the inner rooms in place we have also started the walls between these rooms and the green house, gotten larger parts of the stem of the green house in pace and dug out most of the two planting cells that will be built in the green house in the front part of the house. The septic tank which is going to take care of the waste from the toilet is also dug out and in place, built from tractor tires, thick plastic film and rocks it’s a very cheap solution and after the waste has decomposed it will be led out to an external growing cell.

After a weekend of relaxationa nd massage at the volcano surrounded lake of Atitlán it’s soon time to start the second week of building !

On Sunday the 20th we started meeting other Earthship builders already at the airport from where a minibus was going to take us to the building site in Comalapa, Chimaltenango. Everybody we met were really nice and very excited to start building, some for the first time and others who had been on several builds or even studied at the Earthship Academy. In total we were about 90 people from 22 different countries. 60 volunteers through Earthship Biotecture, 10 local colunteers, 10 people from Long Way Home and 10 from the Earthship HQ building crew.

After an early breakfast on the Monday it was finally time to start building! When we arrived at the site we saw that Long Way Home had already done a great job preparing the building site by excavating and leveling. The Earthship-team from the US were already in place and working on the first course of tires that would become the main walls.

We could hardly believe our eyes – already the first day, most of the tires and the wire-cage for the first roof section was in place. A very productive first day!

In about one week it’s time for two of Earthship Biotecture Sweden’s members to travel to Guatemala to build an Earthship there! We are very happy to take part of this opportunity to learn as much as possible about building Earthship and at the same time helping a family secure their basic needs through a housing solution with no bills.

We will be taking part in Earthship HQ’s Guatemala Project that entails building a mid-size (about 105 m²) Earthship in the “Survival Model” style during the three week build.

Plan of the Survival Model Earthship

The build will be the second that Earthship Biotecture do together with Long Way Home in Comalapa, Guatemala. We will build the house for a family who work with the non-profit organisation Long Way Home that in turn work with building schools that not only takes care of and educates the attending students but does so in a sustainable way. The project is still not 100% funded so feel free to visit earthship.com/guatemala and contribute with what you can spare and you will also help make this project a success!

Building site

The build will start on January 21st at which time we will be on site ready with our tools, camera and heads ready to absorb as much knowledge as possible. We will also be writing about our experiences here, on Earthship Biotecture Sweden’s blog as often as we can.

Se you soon!

Earthship houses are sustainable houses in every sense of the word. They enable their inhabitants to live a carbon zero life at the same time as they provide the comforts one would expect of a modern house. They manage to do this in a simple enough way that common people can very quickly learn how to build their own. We believe this is truly amazing and that is why we are translating “Earthship Volume I: How to build your own” into Portuguese so that the almost 200 million people living in Brazil can start building theirs!

Why is a Portuguese edition needed?

Brazil is a country with great contrasts and social inequalities. There are many people who live without shelter and basic sanitation and with no opportunities or means to improve their living situation. At the same time there are a lot of people with resources who are living very comfortable lives. Unfortunately, Brazilian construction norms are very energy-inefficient and the comfort of heating and cooling comes at the cost of requiring huge amounts of energy. The generation of which comes at a great cost to people and nature – especially the Amazon rainforest. Earthship technology offers both groups a sustainable way of improving their housing situation.

2011-08-15- After the seminar with Michael Reynolds we were contacted by Pella Thiel, who is an active member in the Transition Movement Network and the Society for the Conservation of Nature. We were asked to build an earth cellar with Earthship technology for her and her family on their farm outside of Ingarö in Stockholm Sweden.

About 10 of us from Earthship Sweden traveled out to Värmdö with tents and sledgehammers, where we met up with 10 other beautiful spirits who wanted to take part of building the earth cellar. During two three-day periods, we pounded over 120 tires, unloaded several tons of earth and build a concrete reinforced dome ceiling. We built a 15.2 sq earth cellar with tires in 6 days.

We at Earthship Sweden would like to thank all participants for a successful build and a great time! It’s been a pleasure getting to know all these sharp motivated people armed with energy, positive spirit and respect for this planet.

More information and photos about the construction of Värmdö will appear shortly. Keep a lookout!

Facing climate change, natural disasters and water shortages there is an urgency to develop more environmentally friendly solutions. Most importantly, to create more efficient and green technology and to break oil dependency.

This is a pressing issue if we want to create a brighter future for the planet and all its inhabitants before the eco-system is degraded to a point of no return. Earthship is more than simply a technology for building housing, it also contributes to a less resource-intense lifestyle and increases awareness of our relationship with nature. With this knowledge we have a chance to eliminate the destructive behaviors that threaten the environment on our planet. Earthships are tools to radically reduce humanity’s negative pressure on natural resources and the environment. They enable us to return to a life in greater harmony with nature.
